 Symptoms associated with shoulder separation are pain and discomfort in the shoulder region; loss of range of motion; pain at the end of the collarbone; swelling; possible deformity consisting of a lump at the injured site; and pain on movement in the shoulder.

 Thoracic Outlet Syndrome or TOS has three related syndromes involving the shoulder:  Neurogenic TOS; Vascular TOS; and Nonspecific TOS.  Thoracic Outlet Syndrome happens when there is compression of the brachial plexus or  subclavian vessels.

 Neurogenic TOS may affect the base of the thumb.  Numbness radiates along the underside of the forearm and hand with aching pain in the neck.  In addition, pain in the neck, shoulder and armpit can be aggravated with any type of activity.  

Impingement Syndrome also known as “Swimmer’s Shoulder,” occurs when the tendons of the rotator cuff become irritated.  This condition can lead to thickening of the tendon which causes a lump in the joint.

AC  joint or acromioclavicular joint separation results when the two bones that form the AC joint receive trauma.  This trauma can result in damaged ligaments.

ACROMIOCLAVICULAR JOINT:  Separation of the “AC joint” occurs when the two bones that form the

acromioclavicular joint

become injured resulting in damage to ligaments that form the AC joint.  The acromioclavicular joint is found in the shoulder and is susceptible to injury during an automobile accident.  Particularly, the left shoulder, which can be due to pressure from the seatbelt.
